In this new THEMATIC NOTES number, you will find my Top 10 favorite whiskies of the year 2018 (actually more than 10 as they were many equally-ranked whiskies this time, so there are rather 25 whiskies listed & reviewed here!), for those I have been able to taste in 2018. Of course I guess there are other very good whiskies that do not appear in this list, and even if they have been receiving great reviews by respectable reviewers, as I have not been able to taste these ones, this isn’t a "complete" list, but rather an indication of my tastes & recommendations to you, if it happens you come across these bottles. Besides, in order to make things more simple, I have chosen this time to erase all categories or types of whiskies, so they are all rated equally whatever type they are. The only mandatory condition was that they had to be bottled in year 2018.

You will find here tasting notes about all ALL the whiskies of the list, selected upper my 90/100 (already “excellent”) rank. Some the notes here are unreleased (around 8 notes), others have been already published on my website, sometimes on different sections, but some have been revised for the occasion.

Thanks again to the professionals or amateurs contributions for their samples, when it wasn’t the case of purchase bottles. It is much appreciated, but I have to precise I assure you that it doesn’t mean my opinion on these whiskies has been biased in any way here.

MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (MEDAILLE D’OR): 97/100

BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (GOLD MEDAL):

-LOT 40 « CASK STRENGTH Â», 11 ans, 100 % RYE whisky (American Oak Barrels), Edition limitĂ©e 2018 (Second Edition), 58,4 % (RYE WHISKY, Ontario, CANADA):

Couleur:Vieil or, Ă  reflets ambrĂ©s, voire orangĂ©s. Nez: Impressionnant ! Note confirmĂ©e: 97/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color: Golden color, even with orange hues. On the nose, it is impressive! Thick, woody, spicy, fruity, floral, clearly only “rye driven”, it has also a solvent note reminding me a bit of some unadulterated Cognacs. Like the previous 2017 edition, it needs some time to open up. On the palate : The same “Wow!” factor than the 2017 edition, but here with a bit more impact, probably because of the higher abv. Powerful, even a bit spirity (it gets better after some time in the glass), the palate goes beyond the nose’s expectations: Gourmet, it glorifies an exceptional & original fruitiness (exotic fruit such as guava & papaya, Chinese arbulus fruit, but also overripe strawberries, blackberries, gooseberry-a bit sour cherries-with again this amazing highly concentrated rhubarb note). The fruit is then melted with some beautiful heady flowers notes (rose & peony). Of course there’s a lot of rye there (with a varied spices combo), melted with beautiful woody notes (rosewood) that are sometimes green as well (eucalyptus, cedar), but there are also some tobacco leaves for Havana cigars & some hard caramel (French "carambar" sweets). The finish sees a focus on the rhubarb notes, tainted by a touch of rose. This is becoming really "orgasmic" now, I have to say, so much the flavors explosions on the palate are huge. With a few drops of water: I have to point out that it is almost drinkable without water, but sure a few drops will help the whisky become a bit milder & brings on more sensuality. Do not add too much water to this one, though, otherwise you might get some bitterness and lose the "'magic" of it. Indicative Price: Around CAN $ 100 (£ 60), only at the LCBO (state office of alcohols of Ontario), Canada, but I’m afraid it’s sold out now as I am writing this note. Conclusion: An exceptional whisky for sure, better than last year’s release I think (which was already stunning), that makes it enter without a doubt in the (new one to invent) “rye monster” category. A big thank you to Don Livermore for this sample, a whisky tasted during the Whisky Live Paris 2018 & home, from a sample. Confirmed rating: 97/100

2° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (MEDAILLE D’ARGENT): 96/100

2nd BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (SILVER MEDAL):

-BALBLAIR Vintage « 1991 Â»(2018, 3rd Release), 24 ans en ex-American Oak Bourbon casks, puis 3 ans en fĂ»ts de Sherry, 46 % (SINGLE MALT-Highlands du Nord, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur: Vieil or.

ENGLISH NOTES : Color: Old gold. On the nose, it’s very refined, seductive, very complex, with beautiful fruity notes (apricot, quince, yellow peaches), beautiful green notes (quality Earl Grey tea with bergamot, black tea, some mossy forest notes as well), melted with heady flowers notes (including lily of the valley), but also some icing sugar (the one for the French pastry called “Mille-Feuilles”), superb Turkish delights notes, all fruit honey, orange zests & dark chocolate. This BALBLAIR has already quite some depth on the nose, impressive! On the palate, which is very faithful to the nose, this beautiful program is respected & fulfilled, is part of the distillery house style (or trademark is you prefer), as, by the way, for the 2 previous expressions tasted. It’s herbal, but mainly beautifully fruity (apricots, oranges, yellow peaches, quince), floral, a bit “pastry-ish” again, enhanced by some sweet spices, all in a perfect balance, with a beautiful complexity & of an undeniable depth. A real symphony of flavors, with a constant seductive floral note on the background. If you add just a few drops of water (not more, please), it will help making the ensemble even smoother. A first-class single malt, with a great elegance & remarkably crafted. Conclusion: A decently aged single malt (27 years old !), with a old golden robe, of a certain density. A masterpiece of subtlety. Confirmed rating (after a taste at the distillery, then after a sample of it, then at a whisky show in Paris & revised after my bottle): 96/100

3° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (MEDAILLE DE BRONZE): 95/100

3rd BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (SILVER MEDAL):

3 Whiskies are ex-aequo / 3 whiskies are equally ranked :

Couleur: Vieil or. Note confirmĂ©e: 95/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color : Old gold. Nose : Refined, complex, but very direct. Balanced, but paradoxically quite exuberant, at the same time very generous in expressing its rich Pedro Ximenez finish, loud & clear stated estery notes, plus on top of that (or deeply inside that) a grassy peat. It is the “tour de force” for me of this expression wich is for me exceptional. Yellow fruits, heady flowers, rich dried fruit, beautiful wood & grassy, smoky peat are the other key components on the nose. On the palate, it’s simply crazy! (I mean crazy good). The peat (grassy, dense, then getting ashy), the esters (English liquorice allsorts sweets, exotic fruit-pineapple, guava), the Sherry (candied & dried fruit, including dates, figs, sultanas macerated in eau-de-vie) & some heady flowers are all present for an absolutely unreleased & very sensual & formidable proposal
With a few drops of water, the whisky opens up more on yellow fruit & heady flowers, on black & green tea, on dark chocolate as well as on roasted moka (a bit acidulous as well). It is more than the time to call the “the famous brigade” (Serge, if you hear me?). Conclusion: Yes this whisky is young (8 years old!), excessive, explosive, unusual, going in 3 different directions, but it manages to make these paths meet quickly, and is very gourmet. So, in my opinion, it is already a masterpiece at its young age, as I had sensed when I tasted it’s younger brother” aged only 6 y.o. (an advance sample with a 61 % abv-I reviewed in my “GROS PLAN”. I think the whisky is ready-the whisky gained in depth with 2 years more...) even if it could evolve positively in the casks for a few years more, and congrats to Graham Coull for this extraordinary expression! Confirmed rating: 95/100

-GLEN MORAY officiel « 120th Anniversary Bottling Â», de 15 ans (Distilled in 2002, bottled in 2018), "Charity Bottling", 120 bouteilles, Bourbon casks, Sherry, Port & Madeira casks, Virgin Oak finish, (peated), 52,4 % (SINGLE MALT-Speyside, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Conclusion: Tout simplement un chef d’oeuvre ! Note confirmĂ©e: 95/100

ENGLISH NOTES:

Warning: This one shall not be confused with another distillery anniversary edition called “Mastery”, which has a lot of qualities too it seems (of what I heard from reviewers-I haven’t tasted the “Mastery” myself yet), but it is a charity bottling for the 120th anniversary of the distillery. As an experienced taster, I can tell this whisky contains probably older whiskies than 15 years old (I will say probably 18 y.o. or more).

This little jewel from the distillery is very complex & very expressive, with a luxuriant nose, clearly peated but not only, and has quite some depth. Very attractive. The Sherry is clearly there too, but not only, as Madeira & Port casks “have their fruity & a bit winey say”-maybe some red wine too-bringing on some candied fruit notes, some red fruit as well, dark chocolate & moka, Earl Grey & black tea (both almost over-infused), but also some astonishing black olive notes (a bit oxidative-close to Greek olives from Kalamata) that usually one can find is Pedro Ximenez wine. On the palate, this festival of flavors is sublime, with complex estery notes melted with the other notes (grassy peat, rich & dense Sherry, natural caramel-Carambar sweet-but also beautiful malty notes, on a noble wood ground). A few drops of water brings on more refinement, with now some beautiful dessert wine or muted wine notes coming through-close to French Maury wine-with some discrete red fruit notes return. Conclusion: Simply a masterpiece ! Confirmed rating: 95/100

-PORT ASKAIG n.a.s. (7 ans) « 1OO PROOF Â», mise en bouteille par le nĂ©gociant The SPECIALITY DRINKS Ltd (ELIXIR Distillers), (supposed from CAOL ILA distillery), 57,1 % (SINGLE MALT, Islay, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni): (Nouvelle Note)

Couleur: Or pale.
Note confirmĂ©e : 95/100

ENGLISH NOTES : (New note)

Color : Pale gold. Nose : Refined, precise, complex, mineral & very coherent. The peat smoke, a bit ashy, is perfectly married with the other notes, wether it is citrus fruit, esters (English liquorice allsorts, exotic fruit), or almonds or vanilla (rather discrete). I also get a hint of chlorophyll (typical from the CAOL ILA distillery), and some marine notes (seaspray, varied shellfish, salt). Then some delicate floral notes appear, as well as a discrete dark chocolate note. Palate : Wow ! Splendid ! Linear & coherent all the way. The palate is faithfull to the nose (with floral, fruity, marine, smoky, peated notes), but do precise even more the almond note that is now close to « frangipane Â» (almond cream-here let’s say light in sugar). Vanilla remains on the background, while the peat provides a beautiful star anise note, melted with an ashy peat, a thin dark chocolate note, & towards the end, some spices (French pepper called « piment d’Espelette Â»). Superb minerality. Maybe a thin menthol note. A whisky you can enjoy without water, even if it is easier with some. With a few drops of water, I cannot say anything else than « this whisky becomes joyous Â». Conclusion : I have no idea how Oliver Charlton does his casks selections for the different brands under the name of ELIXIR Distillers (previously only known as « The SPECIALITY DRINKS Ltd Â»), but this is pretty much remarkable how he manages to keep the consistency over the years, and especially for this reference, tasted several times (on different batches), I do not see any decrease of quality over the years so that it helps me to lean on my rating. Price : Around 70 € in France. Confirmed rating : 95/100

4° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (HAUTEMENT RECOMMENDES): 94/100

4th BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED):

 3 Whiskies are ex-aequo / 3 whiskies are equally ranked :

-CAMERON BRIDGE 36 ans (1982-2018), emb. WHISKY BROKER, Single Cask (N°8278-Bourbon barrel, 303 bouteilles), 50 cl, Cask Strength, 54,6 % (SINGLE GRAIN-Lowlands, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):(Nouvelle Note)

Couleur: Vieil or.
Note confirmĂ©e : 94/100

ENGLISH NOTES : (New note)

Color : Gold. Nose : Sumptuous ! Driven by a smooth hard caramel note,a « creme brulee Â» note as well, but also a note close to some Canadian whiskies (yes I’m thinking here of J.P. WISER’S whiskies), with notes of noble nut (macadamia nut, for instance), a complex vanilla note, elegant corn notes, then milk chocolate & dried fruit (dates, sultanas, almonds) join the show and frankly, the nose itself is already fabulous. Palate: The palate is of a great serenity, faithful to the nose, gathers all its nose into a succulent ensemble, even without water
I don’t know what else to say than it is a “corn festival” of a great sensuality on the palate, with a discrete but efficient oak that one barely notice, Some sweet spices bring some more structure to the whisky which is of a great coherence & of a beautiful balance. With a few drops of water, this whisky becomes very silky, and stays on the sames notes. Please do not dilute it too much, as you might lose the generosity this whisky shows when undiluted. Conclusion: I have to say this one is for me by far the best CAMERON BRIDGE bottling I have ever tasted, a true dessert, and seem to confirm all the good things heard about this UK independent bottler (WHISKY BROKER). Thanks so much to Mike (of “The Whisky Family” vlog, but also working for House of Malt shop in Carlisle, in England) for this rare sample. Price: Around ÂŁ 65 when it was released (yes, I know, but it is 50 cl), probably now much more on the secondary market (see their website). Confirmed rating: 94/100

Couleur : Or clair, Ă  reflets lĂ©gĂšrement dorĂ©s.

T.N.: Color : Gold. Nose : Sumptuous ! The pastry character of this whisky is huge, with notes of almond cream, praline, hazelnut, but has also nice notes of honey, angelica, sweet spices (cinnamon, nutneg), but also natural caramel. Palate : As sumptuous as the nose, gourmet (fulfilling all the nose promises about the huge pastry notes), complex, refined, and of an incredible delicacy. Notes of pecan nut are now coming through, as well as sweeet spices, custard, creme brulee, roasted corn, baked apples, and some complex oaky notes. I think there are also some floral notes, but I struggled to identify them. Vanilla is there too, but not overwhelming. The ensemble is masterfully crafted & the balance is perfect (congrats to Suntory’s master-blender Shinji Fukuyo!). Besides, on the palate, the mouthfeel is almost silky & shows a great refinement. Adding some drops of water makes it even more sexy. I didn’t try it on ice, but I think I’ll be happy to try it on an iceball. I’m sure it could be interesting, and probably in a cocktail as well. Conclusion : Of course there is some wood technology involved there, and different cask types to get a certain result & some complexity (this is by no means an ordinary grain whisky, but rather « haute couture Â» !), but it is so well crafted (yes, that famous Japanese « know how Â»), so gourmet, so complex, with almost a milky & onctuous mouthfeel, with this splendid caramel, corn and oaky notes ! For me it is simple, it is in my opinion the most beautiful no age statement grain whisky on the market, and this worldwide
 Confirmed rating : 94/100

 -« J.P. WISER’S, n.a.s. « COMMEMORATIVE SERIES / CANADA 2018 Â», Edition 2018, 43,4% (BLENDED WHISKY, Ontario, CANADA):

Divin.

ENGLISH NOTES: This expression is part of a commemorative series for Canada’s independence. Here it is to celebrate the 200 years of treaties established in 1818 between Great-Britain & United States to define the Southern borders of the country in the 49th parallel. T.N.: First off, the nose is exceptional, and the way it melts all the different aromas while managing to display the Hiram WALKER’s distillery so delicate yet gourmet character is mindblowing. So once more, and for my biggest pleasure, I get these hard caramel notes (carambar), crushed almonds & noble nut notes (pecan nut, macadamia nut), toasted wood, vanilla cream & French « crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e’ dessert, topped by sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves) ? Divine ! On the palate, it is the same complexity, sensual melting of flavors, faithful to the nose. Complexity, balance, elegance, « gourmetness Â», this one ticks all the boxes, so no need to say more. With water (a few), it brings even more suppleness, creaminess & makes the caramel notes even more sexy. Conclusion: Another stunner that is simply splendid ! Kudos to Don Livermore, once again ! Confirmed rating: 94/100

5° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (MENTION SPECIALE): 93/100

5° BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (SPECIAL MENTION):

 6 Whiskies are ex-aequo / 6 whiskies are equally ranked :

-GLEN MORAY officiel Vintage « 1998 Â» (sampled 30/08/18), « P.X. finish Â» (16 ans en fĂ»ts de Bourbon, 4 en fĂ»ts de Sherry de type “Pedro Ximenez”), 45,5 % (SINGLE MALT-Speyside, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni): (Note rĂ©visĂ©e)

Couleur: Vieil or. Note confirmĂ©e: 93/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Golden color. Short notes: This whisky displays the smouthness & sugar-driven qualities of a Pedro Ximenez type of Sherry added to the already accomplished beautiful Bourbon main maturation “for a more than decent time” and the result is wonderful. Rich dried fruit (apricots, dates, figs, sultanas), but also dark chocolate, makes a sensation in the palate that is mouthcoating & lively at the same time, as if you were tasting a liquid brownie, Ovaltine straight from the box, so yes there is a lot of chocolate & malt in that one (plus the fruit). With a few drops of water makes it “more whisky”, if I may say. Price : If I'm not mistaken, around ÂŁ 125, but only at the distillery. Conclusion: A real treat, and a dessert as well as a whisky! Confirmed rating: 93/100

-« J.P. WISER’S 19 ans « SEASONED OAK Â» (“Rare Cask Series”), Edition 2018, 48 % (BLENDED WHISKY, Ontario, CANADA):

Intriguant. Bouche: Bel Ă©quilibre et beau dĂ©veloppement de notes boisĂ©es complexes (bois usĂ©, bois neuf brut, bois travaillĂ© avec colles un rien rĂ©sineuses, un rien parfumĂ©es d’amande, teck = bois tropical), noix nobles fraĂźches (noix de pĂ©can, noix de macadamia), Ă©pices douces, caramel dur (modĂ©rĂ©), et fruits confits variĂ©s. Impressionnant !

ENGLISH NOTES : This limited expression (6000 bottles) has been matured in oak casks that have been dried before filling twice more than usual, that is to say during 4 years. T.N.: This whisky needs a bit more time to open that others. Slight solvent note, then burnt wood, a strong pastry note (nougat & praline), but also a hint of red fruit notes (that evokes a significant rye presence), quality new oak (just finished new house wood floor). Intriguing. On the palate, there is a beautiful developpment of complex wood notes (used wood, new raw oak, wood using slightly almond perfumed resinous glues, tropical wood called "teck"), fresh noble nut notes (pecan nut, macadamia nut), varied sweet spices & moderate hard caramel notes. Add some varied candied notes and you get the full picture. Impressive ! With water, more suppleness is provided, and enhances the important but perfectly mastered wood work, wood selection. Conclusion : Once again this expression testifies of the meticulous amount of work master-blender Don Livermore did put into crafting this. Another achievement to put at his credit ! Confirmed rating : 93/100

-KILCHOMAN officiel “MACHIR BAY"/"Land Rover Tour" 2018 Limited Edition, Cask Strength, 59,8 % (SINGLE MALT, Islay, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni): (Nouvelle Note)

Couleur: Or pale. Merci Ă  Mike du vlog « The Whisky Family » (ex-The Maltman Mike & Friends) & de House of Malt, pour cet Ă©chantillon. Indication de Prix : Autour de ÂŁ 100 ? (Ă  confirmer) au Royaume-Uni. Note confirmĂ©e : 93/100

ENGLISH NOTES : (New note)

Color : Pale yellow. Nose: Refined, with some seaspray, some esters (English liquorice allsorts, black liquorice, pineapple, and maybe some banana as well), sweet spices as well (including white pepper), some discrete flowers, some citrus fruit & a beautiful peatsmoke note, a bit on an ashy side. Palate: Very powerful, then it calms down after a moment, it hasn’t a lot of body (less than in a version called “Original Cask Strength”-the first one ever for the French market-which remains a reference for me, the one to beat if you like), even if this whisky is fat. On the palate, one will find the smoky, ashy, peaty (with the star anise for good measure), some beautiful seaspray notes as well, a nice & discrete floral note as well, and an as discrete and superb note of lemon sherbet (with light sugar). With a few drops of water, this whisky gets easier to enjoy and keeps a power that is a bit lacking in the reduced expression of the core range. Conclusion: A beautiful expression & alternative to the “Machir Bay” that we would like to see more often on the shelves. Thanks a lot to Mike from “The Whisky Family” vlog (previously called “Maltman Mike & Friends”) & House of Malt. Price: Around ÂŁ 100 in UK (to be confirmed), but it is a limited edition. Confirmed rating: 93/100

-LOT 40, n.a.s., 100 % RYE whisky (American Oak barrels), Edition 2018, 43 % (RYE WHISKY, Ontario, CANADA):

Couleur: Vieil or, reflets dorĂ©s. Note confirmĂ©e: 93/100

T.N.: Color: Gold, with partly orange hues. On the nose, it is smooth (sensual), refined & heady (as heady flowers notesare, not spirity ones). A bit oxydizing, with some acidulous & sour character, but quickly showing a huge expressivity of both its fruity notes (including varied red fruit, rhubarb, blackberry, blackcurrant) and its floral notes (rose & peony), plus its cereal notes (the rye & its spices) and a malted rye note. On the palate, it is powerful, very fruity, dominated by the rye (reminding me a bit of rectangular German bread called “Kornbrod”), then the malted rye & the spices. The palate slowly sweetens & the rye notes are becoming now acidulous & sweeter the more it evolves, with a note of gooseberry (a bit sour cherries) coming through. The rhubarb is then dominating, in company of flowers (peony & rose again), and a beautiful rosewood note. There are a lot of things going on there, even if all these notes converge towards a unique arrival point. This is superb & very sexy ! After a few tastings though, I noticed that the palate’s finish tends to fade a bit too quickly, which makes me lower the rating of half a point. With a few drops of water: The rye comes through, with strength, but the balance is still good & the taste terribly seductive. Conclusion: This is such a special whisky, unique in its way of combining a cereal (besides it is malted & unmalted rye combined) to a double distillation process (plus using a column still then a pot still), but also to a particular maturation (virgin oak). The result is very special (one will love it or hate it), but for me pretty remarkably coherent & expressive, beyond its apparent simplicity, and its direct kick that may surprise the taster. An important thing to note, I will like to add that, regardless all types of whisky & all countries, it is for me one of the 3 or 4 best quality/price ratio whisky on the market of the last decades (Lot 40 was launched at the end of the 1990s by its distillery Hiram Walker & Sons). Indication of price: Around 35 to 40 € in France. Confirmed rating: 93/100

-« PORT ASKAIG Â» 14 ans, du nĂ©gociant The SPECIALITY DRINKS Drinks Ltd (ELIXIR Distillers), Edition 2018, Bourbon casks, 45,8 % (SINGLE MALT-Islay, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur : Or pĂąle. Note confirmĂ©e : 93/100

ENGLISH SUMMARY : Pale in color, but with quite an engaging nose (about whiskies, and especially Islay whiskies, please never judge a book by its cover!). This new proposal is different from the both the recent 8 years old, the 15 years old & the “100 PROOF” (this for the current range). This is said to be a bourbon matured BUNNAHABHAIN. Like all the others PORT ASKAIG, it is un chillfitred & un coloured. T.N.: On the nose (if you let it breathe a bit), it’s already there, all the promises that will be fulfilled on the palate: A delicious star anise note, oily peat, some juicy & shorbety citrus fruit notes (mainly lemon & grapefruit), some floral notes as well (but difficult to identify), and a generous amount of estery notes (english liquorice allsorts, exotic fruit such as pineapple, banana, but also some guava -& some acidity coming with it, and pear shorbet). There is a beautiful oily peat note along the way, always combined with the star anise note, topped with some exquisite sea spray notes as well. Everything comes on point & melts with the other notes to form a very sensual, perfectly balanced, refined & gourmet palate, but also some aerial feeling about it, and it’s fantastic ! You can add a little water for more “peat galore”’ pleasure. Conclusion: Once again, a remarkable selection made by Oliver Chilton, and one that manages to propose something slightly different from the rest of the PORT ASKAIG range (thinking of what could come next put a wide smile on my face I have to say), and of course another one that I warmly recommend. Confirmed Rating : 93/100

-THREE SHIPS officiel 15 ans, « Pinotage Cask Finish » 2017, James Sedgwick Distillery, Edition 2018 (limitĂ©e), South African Wine casks, 46,2 % (BLENDED WHISKY, Wellington, rĂ©gion : Le Cap, AFRIQUE DU SUD):

Couleur : Vieil or, Ă  reflets orangĂ©s. Nez : Absolument splendide ! Note de fleurs capiteuses, discrĂštes, en filigrane. Note confirmĂ©e : 93/100

ENGLISH NOTES:

Note: This one has been matured in South african red wine casks, a wine called “Pinotage”, conceived in 1925 by Abraham Perold, a Stellenbosch University (South Africa) researcher, who mixed 2 grape varieties, Pinot Noir & Cinsault. The name “Pinotage” is also a tribute to a famous French wine “Hermitage” (& especially the “Tain l’Hermitage”) that Perold admired so much. This is a limited edition of around 4000 bottles, 3500 were available for regular sale, and the rest kept for marketing purposes.

Tasting Note: Golden color, with orange hues. On the nose, it’s absolutely splendid ! Richly fruity, with some pastry tendancies, with notes of tinned apricot & yellow peaches with syrup, but also with turkish delights, plums, then greener notes (black tea, Earl Grey tea, with a light mentholated touch), ancient/old fashioned sherry (with marasquino cherries), very few oak & some discrete heady flowers notes, all very well balanced. With some air, a bit more wood is coming through (eucalyptus & cedar mainly), but staying moderate. Seductive ! On the palate, it is faithful to the nose’s notes, with same rich pastry notes, heady flowers notes, fruity notes, and maybe it adds to it varies spices, including nutmeg & 5 berries pepper. The balance is impressive, with a big wine influence but almost no what I call “vinosity” (acidic/sour/very oxydative notes). Quite some fruitiness now, with rounded notes of varied red fruit including pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries & mulberries. What is great is that it’s only very slightly tannic & ok the oak is strong, firm, but not dominating. With some air, at second tasting, it got a bit more oaky & acidic, (but still very moderate), and some spices are coming through a bit more on the front (nutmeg, cinnamon, 5 berries pepper), but the ensemble’s balance is still impressive. With some water, it reinforces its slight winey side that turns from a very moderate one to more classic one, but brings also more tannins & structure to the ensemble. In doing so, it makes it lose part of its charm in my opinion, that’s why I prefer to drink it neat. Conclusion: A remarkable “de luxe” blended whisky, with a local wine maturation that is frankly a great success, unlike many wine finishes or full maturations that usually are a disaster, with a full wine domination and a very sour/acidic mouthfeel that slaughters the distillate. Here’s it is not the case, and is masterfully crafted by Andy Watts, the master-distiller (& master-blender as well), to whom I would like to pay homage here. Fruity “Gourmetness” (I know this word doesn’t exist, but you’ll certainly get the picture) & balance are the key words here. The secret of its balance may also reside in the nature of this South African wine, as a wine specialist recently told me that the Cinsault grape variety was often used in wine assemblages to bring more roundness & fruitiness, with no tannic addition & also that it may compensate those tannins often consequent in Pinot noir grape variety. Confirmed rating: 93/100

-BRUICHLADDICH 16 ans (2002-2018), emb. CLAXTON, Sherry Puncheon, 61,2 % (SINGLE MALT-Islay, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

ENGLISH SUMMARY: Color: Amber color, with orange hues. On the nose, you already know something powerfull is going on there. A complex fruity, floral, spicy, woody (& even a bit smoky) combo is delivered without warning & it is huge. Almost a bit heady on alcohol, on the palate too it is very fruity (tons of red fruit, cherries in eau-de-vie, in syrup, dried fruit, oranges-including blood oranges), with some heady flowers too (lily of the valley), some dried herbs too, then quickly warming with some big spices (carribean chilli pepper spice, black pepper), a slight bitterness coming from some tight tannic wood, even some smoky notes related to the wood, it is impressive. It also need water to tame a bit this obvious Sherry monster. With water, the profile becomes a bit more "pastry-ish", with some French "Mille-Feuilles" dessert notes, some raspberry filled wafers, some ripe strawberries, but also a hint of menthol. Heady flowers are still there to underline this generous fruitiness, but it stays intense in terms of wood influence, and of spices. Conclusion: A powerful BRUICHLADDICH with a lot of things to say, and which didn’t stop to develop its qualities from the first to the last tasting of the sample. Excellent ! Confirmed rating: 92,5/100

7° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (TRES RECOMMENDE): 92/100

SEVENTH BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (VERY RECOMMENDED):

4 Whiskies are ex-aequo / 4 whiskies are equally ranked:

-ABERFELDY MillĂ©simĂ© « 1999 Â» (available as « bottle your own Â», on demand, here in 2018), Single Cask (Cask N°20658-First Fill Sherry), 60,6 %(SINGLE MALT-Highlands, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni): (Note rĂ©visĂ©e)

ENGLISH NOTES: (Revised note)

Note: This one is a “bottle your own” single cask, to be bottled oneself at the distillery, or to pick within the pre-bottled by the staff ones available for customers in a hurry (thing which I did, because time was running out). It is not exactly the same than the cask N°29 (which was only available to taste during the "Cask tour" or "Connoisseur tour"-we had the second one), but it is very good as well. Note that it is not the one that’s more visible, not the one presented before the cask in the distillery shop, but rather on the shelves around.

Tasting Note: Color: Mahogany. Nose: This is a powerful single malt, dry, tannic, very woody, which needs time & a bit of water to open up & reveal all its qualities, wether they are fruity or malty & chocolaty. The sumptuous nose is dominated by the Sherry, with beautiful dried fruit notes (dates, figs, sultanas), heady flowers, dark & thick chocolate, spices (French-mildly chilli-pepper called “Piment d’Espelette” & black pepper). The malt here is very upfront, linked to chocolate (Ovaltine mainly) and, with a few drops of water, some subtle green notes appear (forest moss, mushrooms, black tea). On the palate, very faithful to the nose, all these notes appear progressively, after the initial burst of alcohol & dry wood & spices, that one has to use some water to tame. After a few tastings, the spicy & oaky side lowers a bit, and there is a progression of the malty notes (it is even a bit nutty), but it stays very strong if consumed without water. With a few drops of water: Then it can evolve to a more serene profile, and display its more chocolaty & malty than fruity profile. Conclusion: This is a powerful single malt, dry, tannic, very woody, which needs time & a bit of water to open up & reveal all its qualities, wether they are fruity or malty & chocolaty. Less spectacular than cask N°29, despite my reservations, it translates pretty well the qualities of ABERFELDY distillate, and this without filter”. Price: £ 160 (only available at the distillery). Confirmed rating (after having tasted my bottle-N°25): 92/100

-DUMBARTON 32 ans (1986-2018), emb. CLAXTON, Bourbon Barrel, 55 % (SINGLE GRAIN, Lowlands, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur : Vieil or, Ă  reflets dorĂ©s.

ENGLISH SUMMARY: Color: Gold to old gold. Nose: There is some refinement here for sure, but I also feel it is going to be quite dry & spicy on the palate, though I get more sweet spices on the nose. There are some typical single grain notes here, such as corn, plenty of caramel, vanilla & sweet spices). No heady solvent notes here (unlike in some other single grain whiskies), and that’s a good point. On the palate, it is powerful, vivid, drying (lots of wood), a bit fruity (including a ripe banana note), shows some viscosity, though staying thin regarding it’s body. Some nice pastry notes are then coming through (praline creamy cake, fudge), lots of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, but also ginger). I have to say this is very good, but relatively difficult to taste without water in my opinion, which isn’t helping it scorewise. With water, the intense spices & wood are still there, but a bit sweetened, letting more seductive caramel & noble nuts (including some macadamia nut) come through, as well as a come back of the ripe banana note. Those more expressive notes here make me think of some Canadian blended whiskies such as the J.P. WISER’S range, which is a compliment for sure. Conclusion: A quality & refined single grain, of a good age/quality/price ratio, and of a closed distillery (fonded in 1938, closed in 2002, recently demolished to build an apartment block) rarely seen bottled (even at indie bottlers), a thing one has to underline. A pity though that this one suffered from the comparison with other single grain bottlings from 2018, and especially with the stunning CAMERON BRIDGE 36 years old bottled by Whisky Broker. Confirmed rating: 92/100

Note confirmĂ©e : 92/100

ENGLISH NOTES :

Color: Gold, with some lightly golden hues.

Nose: A very delicate & refined nose, that needs a bit of time to open up. Refined as well as gourmet & complex, floral (a varied bouquet where it’s hard to pick up a flower in particular), fruity (candied fruit, dried fruit, citrus fruit), a bit briny (like some OLD PULTENEY) or simply maritime, with some strange cheese note (baked parmesan?), with some minerality as well, then on a second ground, there is now some black liquorice, superb green notes (black & Earl Greay tea). What strikes me already is how this whisky has balance, complexity & serenity. Very engaging...

Palate: Superb balance & complexity ! Half-fat, half-dry, this whisky is more expressive & balanced than any other reference of the core range I have tasted so far (the 15 y.o. is more tight, if not a bit closed, for instance, while the “Double-Cask” seem more focused on wood, but I might be wrong, and the latter will be reevaluted soon). It starts with a vague & very light underground petrol note (a vestige of the say “diesel” years of the distillery, in the 2000-2010 years), which is quickly integrated within the other notes, which are floral, fruity (varied fruit with syrup, candied citrus fruit, exotic fruit-some esters here are coming through-but also some dried fruit as well). This complex palate also displays some black liquorice, black pepper, black tea, some heather honey, a slightly briny note (again that shadow of some old OLD PULTENEY 12 y.o. bottlings, even if this whisky is superior to it), then some light wood, and some dark chocolate as well. Beautiful notes of hard caramel (French “carambar” bars) & malted barley complete the painting. This is often close to bitterness but never really falls into it, which is impressive. The melting of all these notes is remarkable, and I sense here a very intelligent choice of the way each type of casks involved has to play in this blending. I also think there could be a wide range of ages implied here, but I’ll be back on this again later on.

With a bit of water, malted barley, caramel, dark chocolate notes & as well as heather honey notes & black tea notes are shining through, but also some complex dried fruit notes (sultanas, dates, figs, apricots-thanks to the P.X. casks !), plus they are beautifully underlined by some delicate smokey peat! Splendid !

Conclusion: A very interesting GLEN SCOTIA, fascinating to taste, of a great elegance & complexity, but alas limited to the global travel retail (UK). For me this expression takes over all the other ones from the core range (except maybe the “Victoriana” I have to taste again) under 18 y.o. (I haven’t tasted the 18 & 25 y.o. & other limited editions yet...so I can't tell how these are compared to this younger brother). Remarkably crafted, this whisky is a very clever combination between the fruity, spicy & estery qualities coming from the Bourbon casks, the fruity & gourmet qualities coming from the Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks (and with no excessive influence), plus the light-all delicate-smoky signature coming from the peated casks ! So kudos to the master-blender here ! One of the most beautiful no age statement (n.a.s) whiskies currently on the market I have to say. I will guess here that 8 to 18 years old casks were probably involved there, but it’s just an opinion (I’ll be curious to know, though
). RPP: £ 52 (the liter). Confirmed rating: 92/100

-MILTONDUFF 10 ans, Edition 2018, emb, GORDON & MacPHAIL/ gamme « Discovery Â», Sherry casks, 43 % (SINGLE MALT, Speyside, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur : Vieil or, Ă  reflets dorĂ©s.
Note confirmĂ©e : 92/100

ENGLISH NOTES: Color: Golden reddish sherry tone. On the nose, it is rich, driven by heady notes (lilac, violet), but also fruity notes (apricot, orange, mandarin, dried currant), then green notes (green & Earl Grey tea, with some menthol, old fashioned craft). Very seductive during the first tasting, it became a less appealing the second time, with some rubbery notes, burnt tyres note, and a vague smoky note, all this reminding me of some “modern” BOWMORE. There is some good consistency, though, in this whisky. On the palate, it is faithful to the floral, fruity and green notes of the nose, but there is also some coffee note, and some “Alsacian Winter spices” too (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, green anise, coriander, pepper) or say, for English readers, rather gingerbread notes. I also get Havana cigars leaves notes, and less rubbery notes. It is clearly sherry driven (and probably refill casks). With some water drops it gets even more sexy. Conclusion: A quality single malt, spectacular at first try, a bit less after, but the second tasting was a bit biased by the heatwave & less good tasting conditions, so I have decided to rely on the first tastings impressions and keep the high rate. Confirmed rating: 92/100

-DEANSTON officiel 15 ans, “ORGANIC” (local barley, American Oak), 46,3 % (SINGLE MALT, Highlands du Sud, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni): (Nouvelle Note)

Couleur: Vieil or.
! Note confirmĂ©e : 91,5/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color : Gold. Nose : Very refined (I get always a bit disappointed of the English translation of this, but
), a bit closed (it needs some air), a bit unusual, with, at the same time a malty dominant feature (with a muesli note), a fruity dominant feature as well (red fruit, varied partly tropical fruit: Cape gooseberry, citron, pineapple), and an elegant oak. Interesting. Palate: On a delicately woody & a tad vanilla based bed, lie some superb fruity notes (red fruit, tropical fruit, but also some pear, varied candied fruit, some dried fruit, including now some currants & quality nut as well), some flowers & sweet spices as well, all melted in a harmonious ensemble. I also get some green notes (mainly camomile tea). With a few drops of water: It develops its appeal even more, and shows the beautiful harmony of the casks blending. Conclusion: I am not too familiar with the core range, especially since the recent rebranding of at least half of the range), but it seemed for me to be the best whisky of the current range (out of 4 expressions tasted) as it was displayed during a French private wine & spirits show called Salon Club-Expert DUGAS in 2018). Thanks to the DEANSTON staff for letting me take a sample of this. Price: I see shocking variations of price about this bottling & frankly I don’t understand why, from around ÂŁ 70 (in the UK) to almost the double
(in France!). Confirmed rating: 91,5/100

-LEDAIG 10 ans (2008-2018), emb. CLAXTON, Refill Hogshead, 54,3 % (SINGLE MALT, Isle of Mull, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur : Or pĂąle.

ENGLISH SUMMARY: Pale yellow color. Nose : Refined & seductive, with some nice elements (a bit floral, a bit fruity-varied citrus fruit in lightly sugared sherbet, nice aniseed, some seaspray, and ashy peat). On the negative side, a yeasty note coming through seem to betray a certain immaturity. On the palate (much more seductive, than the nose), some nice esters are coming through (English liquorice allsorts, exotic fruit-mainly pineapple & banana), then some seaspray, this beautiful aniseed note, varied citrus fruit in lightly sugared sherbet, spices (ginger), and a beautiful fresh roasted coffee note (almost moka), married with a wave of rather convincing ashy peat smoke. In the background a nice almond paste (lightened in sugar) note, with some fresh walnuts. A nice palate, but rather light. With water (this whisky’s key to open it), all these notes are melted together to display a very pleasant & creamy sensation, and that makes it win some points there. Conclusion: A superb LEDAIG, of a good quality/price ratio, among a strong concurrency of young indie bottlings of LEDAIG these last years I have to say, which doesn’t help this one score high, but I recommend it, as it seems to get better & better each time I have tasted it. Confirmed rating: 91,5/100

-TOMATIN officiel 18 ans, Bourbon matured (15 ans) & Sherry finished (3 ans), 46 % (SINGLE MALT, Highlands ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur: Vieil or. Note confirmĂ©e : 91,5/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color : Old gold. Nose : Refined, typically woody & malty before anything else. Discrete hint of Sherry, not much more. Palate : Strongly malted, moderately woody, wax, a delicate a bit winey hint of Sherry (reminder of The GLENROTHES distillery house style), fruity (stewed fruit: apples, pears, and some dried fruit & some citrus fruit), gently spicy (a touch of ginger). The palate evolves towards some generous caramel & some milk chocolate as well, and finally I get an herbal note on the background. Nice! With a few drops of water, this whisky becomes smoother, but too much water can bring some bitterness. I notice a slight acidic note now, coming from the citrus fruit notes. The oak & the spices are getting sweeter, but they are still there. Me I finally prefer it neat
Conclusion : This charming TOMATIN, in which Sherry casks are only an element of it, is an excellent single malt, very efficient, one of my favorite of the core range, if not the favorite, and has the best rating so far (I put aside the prestigious old vintages & high end age statements). Price : Around 80/90 € in France. Confirmed rating : 91,5/100

9° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (RECOMMENDE): 91/100

9th BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (RECOMMENDED):

-GLENGOYNE officiel ‘TEAPOT DRAM” officiel/distillery exclusive 2018/Batch 06 (Small batch), First Fill Sherry casks, unchill filtered, uncoloured, Cask Strength, 59,3 % (SINGLE MALT, Highlands du Sud, ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):(Nouvelle Note)

Couleur: Vieil or, Ă  reflets ambrĂ©s. Note confirmĂ©e : 91/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color : Gold, with some amber hues. Nose : A bit closed at first nosing, a bit spirity as well, but this changes with some air. It is a complex nose, very refined, driven by a complex Sherry which provides notes of milk & dark chocolate, malted barley (it has this in common with TAMDHU house style, the other distillery owned by the Ian MacLEOD group), but also ripe fruit, dried & oriental fruit (apricots, sultanas, dates & figs), varied spices as well, and it is also showing some winey notes as well (from the Sherry). Palate: Powerful, dry & spicy, tannic (but not too excessive), it is subtle & complex, follows faithfully the noses notes, but with more precision & strength: The ripe fruit are there, the malted & chocolaty notes are there too (plus a hard caramel note), but a bit narrow, and the rather huge oak & spices (mainly chili pepper) notes have their say now, even if some are held back, but they are massive. The body of the whisky remains rather thin though (it clearly loses some points there), and stays rather dry, with not much roundness to compensate that, except some delicious dark & milk chocolate notes, malted barley (Ovaltine), and of course those complex ripe & dried fruit notes. Despite these reservations, I have to say that this whisky’s palate is wider & more precise than the n.a.s. Cask Strength expression from the core range, for instance. A good whisky, but not necessarily an easy one to sip without water, at least for me. With a few drops of water: This whisky becomes a bit easier to taste, but if you add more than a few drops, you might see it get unbalanced & oak and spices bring it bitterness as well as a bit of frustration to you. Conclusion: Regarding the high praise reputation of this expression, I have to say I was expecting more body, more generosity from this one, but its body stays too narrow & it lacks a bit of “chewing material”. That said, this “Teapot Dram” proposes a nice journey into the Sherry whiskies world, with chocolate, dried fruit and malted barley at the heart of it. Although this is not so far from the “Cask Strength” core range expression, it is less “dusty” than it, more generous (staying longer on the palate), but for me is beaten by the best batches (so, not all, and for instance batches 46, 47, 50) of ABERLOUR “A’Bunadh”. Thanks to Alan (of “The Whisky Friend” vlog) for this sample. Price: Around ÂŁ 90 (Distillery exclusive, on site & on the distillery’s website).Confirmed rating: 91/100

-TOMATIN officiel 15 ans “MOSCATEL Finish” (durant 5 ans), Edition limitĂ©e 2018 (6000 bouteilles), 46 % (SINGLE MALT, Highlands ECOSSE/Royaume-Uni):

Couleur: Or pale. Note confirmĂ©e : 90,5/100

ENGLISH NOTES : Color : Pale gold. Nose : Refined, winey & fruity (with varied notes of red fruit & grenadine, rounded & well balanced. Palate : Splendid ! Well rounded, flowing, very fruity (varied red fruit, grenadine), slightly floral, but also spicy (ginger, 5 berries pepper, black pepper, then in the mid palate some cinnamon & cloves
), it evolves to a solvent note, then malted barley but also dried herbs, along with some dried fruit, and dark chocolate on the background. We’re not far from a Pinot noir wine palette, with more roundness & less tannins. Beautiful suppleness mouthfeel (the texture is at the same time fluid & silky), despite a drier finale. This whisky’s palate has some charm for sure, and a rare elegance. With a few drops of water (not more), the suppleness of this whisky increases, so does its winey character too (me I prefer it neat). Conclusion : Usually I’m a little picky about wine finishes (especially red wine), that tend to erase the distillery character of the whisky, but here it is not the case, and even if the wine influence is huge, the ensemble is very consistent, elegant, and charming
A nice success! Price : Around 90 € in France. Confirmed rating : 90,5/100

10° MEILLEUR WHISKY DE L’ANNEE 2018  (MENTION SPECIALE: “ESPOIR & INNOVATION”): 90,5/100

10th BEST WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2018 (SPECIAL MENTION : “HOPE & INNOVATION”):

ENGLISH NOTES : 1/ INFORMATIONS & A STATEMENT:

This is the first rye whisky made in Scotland since more than a hundred years. It is not a well known fact that there was in yesteryear a rye tradition in Scotland, but it didn’t last long & distilleries did focus again on malted barley (and other grains for the blended whiskies) in the beginning of the 20th century. This whisky comes from a new distillery, founded in 2015 by the Stirtling family (more precisely by the 3 brothers, John, Iain & David). It is also a farm distillery, and the barley grows a few miles near to the distillery, then malted close to the distillery, at Montrose, with all the production process on site, to produce not only whisky, but also vodka & gin (and flavoured variants of them). The production capacity is of approximatively 250 000 liters of pure alcohol per year, using 2 pot stills & a column still (the latter used for gin & vodka). The first single malt is said to be released for 2030 & will be matured in Bourbon & Sherry casks.

About this expression (bottling) in particular, it is a recipe (or a “mashbill”, as the American says) blending 52 % of Arantes Scottish rye, 33 % Viscount Scottish wheat & 15 % Odyssey malted barley. The whisky was matured in charred American oak & Pedro Ximenez Sherry type, and this is a blend of 3 casks (N° 9, 11 & 16). There are 998 of these first 70 cl bottles and the price is of £ 250 at the moment. For me, the ideal categorization of this whisky isn’t as it is stated on the label “SINGLE GRAIN” but “SINGLE BLEND”, as there are several different grains (rye, wheat, barley) implied in the recipe but all coming from the same distillery. I know that this is not necessarily an official category, but I wanted to express this personal opinion. For example, the Scottish BEN NEVIS and LOCHSIDE distilleries did previously produce some rare single blend expressions, while French WARENGHEM distillery still does it for their blended whisky.

I would like to thank again warmly Rachel & all the ARBIKIE distillery team for their generous sample. I have to precise that I accepted it only after having tell Rachel that she had, prior to send the sample, to accept the fact that my comments & rating could not mandatory be positive, and she accepted it. I know that some bloggers refuse this option and I respect them, but considering the difficulties to come across some rare or new whiskies (especially) and the fact my website is fully free (my budget is very limited for the purchase samples or bottles), so I assume this choice asking my readers to give me credit that it won’t be a biased review.

NOTE DE DEGUSTATION / VF

Couleur: Vieil or.

Note confirmĂ©e : 90,5/100

ENGLISH NOTE: 2/ TASTING NOTE :

Color : Old gold.

Nose : Shocking at first try (the sample just opened) such the oak is strong at the forefront, such its concentration is huge, and the spices as well. It is like entering in a full working carpentry, with the fresh cut wood dust in the air, but at the same time with something warm & spicy that comforts you. The rye is very strong for sure, no doubt...as if there was 80 % rye in it-at the moment I do this first tasting, I have no idea of the percentages of the 3 grains composing this whisky & especially about the rye one-then after some air has entered in the bottle, during the second tasting (confirmed by 2 others), the aromatic profile of this whisky started to change, evolving with some flowers & fruit (with their skin, generous) starting to have their say, with some influence of the P.X. Sherry casks, sweetening (with the help of the wheat component), the whisky and lowering the oak especially. A clear balance has appeared now, making the whisky much more affordable and enjoyable, at the nose already (with some maple, rhubarb & red fruit jam joining the party.

Palate : Splendid ! During the first tasting, something both fascinating & repellent happened...A singularity, already with this intense & OTT (“touch much”) wood, this, combined with strong rye influence, fruity & spicy, didn’t help to understand this whisky. Despite this lack of balance and full domination of the oak & of the rye, I felt something interesting in the secondary notes, but it is only during the second tasting & the 2 next ones that a significant change appeared, the oxydization (a few centiliters now missing in the bottle) helped to open the whisky enough to make it enjoyable. The oak once tamed (or at least tempered), the rye sweetened, other notes could freely come through, (such as red fruit, candied fruit, heady flowers), bringing quite some charm to the ensemble for a much bigger “drinkability”. I did felt then other notes, some sweet & sugared maple syrup, for instance, but also some cloves & nutmeg, some rhubarb & overriped strawberries jam (yes, this comes from the rye), but also some exotic fruit, such as guava (for its acidity), or papaya (for its roundness), but also some raw sugar cane, aged treacle rum (say a bit like “Nay rum”), black dried liquorice, noble nut notes (macadamia nut, pecan nut), and whatever more (I don’t know !). This is fascinating and this then fully justified the increase of my rating from 86/100 to 90/100 & a little more after).

With water: With just a few drops of water, this whisky’s suppleness increases, there is some melting between the treacle note, the now domesticated wood, the ripe fruit, the flowers, the spices, but, guess what? I know prefer it neat! Conclusion: At first a very disturbing whisky, so much oaky & spicy it is, an extreme one, but, little by little, it opened up to reveal a real personality of it own, a unique one in fact, even if I’ll be tempted to call it rather a Northern American whisky, because of the rye, obviously. This promising whisky reminds me of some experiments by the WESTLAND distillery, but also some Bourbons or Canadian blended whiskies (those both wheat & rye driven). To bring some Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks in the recipe was for me at the start a big risk (to change the distillery’s profile), but it finally appears as very clever and very well measured out, as for the malted barley component. So the ensemble is very consistent, as well as daring, elegant and charming. A real success for this first Scottish rye for ages!

Price indication: ÂŁ 250, directly from the distillery or online with them. Confirmed rating: 90,5/100
